I grew up in New Jersey, lived for more than 40 years in Michigan, then moved to South Carolina. I'm a graduate of the University of Notre Dame (Class of 1973, American Studies major) and the University of Michigan Law School (Class of 1976). I've worked as a researcher at the U-M, an associate in a law firm, a legal analyst at a consulting firm, an owner of a legal analysis company, and a freelance writer.
I'm the author of 15 books in the Point/Counterpoint series; and, with my wife Maryanne Nasiatka, Michigan Breweries, a guide book that was published in 2006.
In June 2017, I lost Maryanne, my wife of 34 years. Two years after her passing, I left Michigan and moved to Hilton Head Island, where I can be close to the beach. In 2020, I adopted a gray tabby, which I named "Caesar" because he came home from the shelter on the Ides of March--just ahead of the COVID lockdown. I've become a bar trivia regular, playing on Wednesday nights at Street Meet The American Tavern and Thursday nights at Cool Cats Lounge.
Now retired, I spend part of my days fumbling around with reading, cooking, and photography. In the fall of 2019, I took a class titled "Your Life in Review". The instructor gave us a homework assignment: more than 150 questions about our life story, many of them multiple-parters. After finishing the assignment, I turned my life story into an absurdist novel titled Measured and Found Wanting. From time to time I post snippets of the novel here.
